Scud Hunt Part 1 of 3 (October 16 8pm EST - Sinai Map)

Post by Taco »

All F18 PILOTS: TACO, SQUIRREL, MURF, SPECTRE, PRIMO, KESTREL, CHUNKS, ARRIBE, ENIGMA

Plot: After Egyptian Air Defenses and Ground Forces, with nearly all Soviet Equipment, were destroyed - the Soviets were embarrassed enough to provide SCUD missiles to the Egyptians (knowing the probability of escalation drawing in the Americans). They're flying in via Algeria now, expected to land in the Northwest of Egypt - out of our reach.

Objective: Destroy the SCUDs before they can reach the Suez Canal (150NM from Tel Aviv, the extent of their reach).

Time Limit: 3 Missions (one at Dusk, one overnight, and one at Sunrise)

Challenge: The Suez Canal is one of the densest concentrations of SAMs in the world, approximately 30 SAMs (SA-2s, SA-3s, and SA-6s) identified by scouts and aerial recon. However, intel finds that the Egyptians only purchased between 15-22 of these systems from the Soviets and are well-adept at placing decoys in SAM revetments. The good news is that every SAM is marked by a waypoint (right on the TR).

Tasking: Over the course of three missions, we need to find which SAMs are real, and destroy enough of them to carve a path allowing a shot on the two SCUDs.

Limited Supplies:
  • 6 x AGM-154A.
  • 16 x AGM-154C.
  • 14 x AGM - 88C.
  • No SLAM/SLAM-ERs.
  • All other munitions unlimited.
Loadouts: See Below

Mission Commander: Squirrel (thank you sir). This brings in a good balance of fog of war between Intel and Commander.  I've given Squirrel solid information and some ideas on approaches - whatever he's decided is up to him; I don't know anything from this point on.

Mission Editor / Intel Notes:
  1. Intel: Approximately 30 SAMs, SA-2, SA-3, and SA-6.
  2. Intel: Egypt has a total of 8 Mig-21s, armed with heaters.
  3. Logistics: AWACs coverage on 254.
  4. Loadouts: Remember your assigned loadouts below, you need to load them onto the jet from Ramon's limited stockpile.
  5. I provided Squirrel the .miz file with all SAMs labelled 2-30, broken into five zones for convenience (Coastal, South, Central, North, and Delta).
  6. Please don't die, I feel bad when lots of people die on my missions.
  7. This is a 3-part campaign, you don't need to get it all done in one "go".  Reconnaissance is a near-equal part of this campaign, if you can just come away with a list of real SAM sits (wpts 2, 3, 7, 9, 13..etc) that would be huge and the start of mission 2 would be made significantly easier.
  8. SA-2s are evade-able, you just need to nip into their circle for a bit to see if they take the bait.
  9. In the debrief, please tell me the following:
    1. If you got shot down, what weapons did you have on?  (I'll deduct from out count.  I'll look at TacView for shot weapons).
    2. If you CTD'd, let me know - we won't deduct those weapons from our limit.
    3. Refining our SAM picture: What SAMs are known to be 'real' vs. 'decoys' vs. 'destroyed' in your sector?  This will determine what threat rings are placed for next mission.  Regardless of what's said in the brief, dead SAMs will be dead next mission without threat rings.  If a decoy is correctly determined, I'll remove its threat ring - less clutter on the SA page.  If a decoy is incorrectly determined, it will be a live SAM without a threat ring.  If in doubt, we'll leave a threat-ring on it.

FLIGHT PLAN (Per CMDR. SQUIRREL)
ALL FLIGHTS Flight Wpt 0 = Launch Base (Ramon Airbase - Active Runway is 25L, TACAN 105X)  [AI will use 07L, you can ignore them as the wind is blowing 1 knot from 250]
ALL FLIGHTS Flight Wpt 1 = Bulls (near WPT 2, you do not need to fly to wpt 1)
ALL FLIGHTS Flight Wpt 2 = TEXACO

Colt Flight - Spectre, Chunks, Enigma - Operate at Angels 30
  • WPT 2: Refuel at Texaco.
  • WPT 3: Turning Point outside of SAM envelope.
  • WPT 4: Attack SA-2 at N22 NOTIFY MC WHEN DOWN
    • ("N" stands for north but it is the overall SAM #22.  The "22" is part of a common set of SAM numbers we will use throughout the mini-campaign.  The "N" is just for quick reference that is in the north part of the Canal zone.
  • WPT 5: Probe/Attack SA-2 at D24
  • WPT 6: Probe/Attack SA 2 at D25
  • WPT 7: Probe/Attack SA 2 at D27 OR SA-2 at N21 (WPT 8) (coordinate with Dodge)
  • WPT 9: Return to Ramon Airbase (but don't fly direct if this takes out over SAMs)
  • All waypoints after are a common set of waypoints to help you identify if a SAM fired upon you that's not on your task list above.  All flights have the same waypoints after their Ramon Airbase waypoint.  They are labelled with the SAM location (C12, C13, C14, N15...etc)

In, certainly can't promise not to die, since I don't believe I've ever survived a Taco Mission, but I know it will be awesome!
