BACKGROUND DETAILS AND INFORMATION:

With rising tensions in the south American peninsula, there have been none higher then tensions between Argentina and Chile. With the recent abrupt complete abandonment of Argentina from discussions leading to NATO partnership, it appears all ties have been severed with Western countries. All attempts at negotiation have ceased and a new president has been ‘elected’ by the Argentinian people. Most outsiders are saying that rampant Chinese involvement in the voting process has tampered any sense of democracy but nothing can be proven.

The new Argentinian president ran on promises of bringing the country out of poverty and back to the once great nation it was. This is to include negotiations with both Chile and the UK to recover the lost lands of both the Falkland islands and the southern part of Chile that are known to be rich in a new rare earth metal ‘ligmatassium’. Fringe Argentine factions have long-asserted that Chile holds land south of the Strait of Magellan solely via trickery. The treaty-maker’s ‘intent’ was always that Argentina owns all land south of its Atlantic entrance, thus these Argentine factions seek to impose sovereignty over everything south of San Gregorio. This metal has only been found in the southern area of the continent and is rumored to have a value higher then that of diamonds and will change the face of technology if large enough quantities are found. At this point the only country to have found this metal in small quantities has been Chile. It is unknown where these samples came from but is believed that Argentinian companies have come into sovereign Chilean waters illegally and taken the metal. It is also believed this is why the new Argentinian regime is pushing so hard to ‘reclaim’ the southern part of the continent. Chile has outright denied any claim that Argentina has to its southern areas.

As the region in the south of Chile is extremely rugged and vast. Chilean forces have not been able to pinpoint where these undertakings are happening, have not been able to produce any proof that Argentinian units have been inside their borders, however Chile has warned that if any Argentinian vessels are found illegally in their waters that they will be fired upon and sunk. This claim of course brought stern condemnation from superpower countries China and Russia, who are vowing that they will support Argentina and its people from the tyrants of the west.

NATO countries have denounced any claims Argentina has made, and has instructed all parties that cooler heads will prevail, Argentina has once again stated that they will no longer fear the NATO alliance, and that they will do what is right for their people. UK forces are naturally on edge with the history in the area but are not willing to get into another full scale operation overseas. Chile has asked that NATO sends reinforcements and equipment to shore up the lacking air and land forces currently fielded so that they can ramp up patrols in the southern part of the area. NATO as a whole has denied this equipment but new US President Elect has vowed to support the Chilean government and while not looking to get into a war will send units to the area.

With the dispute reaching a boiling point, the US has decided to send a task force to the area. This is to include the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and its full task force. It has begun steaming south after a full retrofit in Norfolk shipyard and is expected to be off the coast of the Falkland islands withing 12 days. Task force orders currently are to maintain a presence in the area, including cross training with the Chilean and UK air forces in the area to strengthen both political and military opinions in the area. The UK has given full permission for the task force to use their bomb range and air to air weapons ranges in the mean time for the un determined amount of time required.

Chile has asked for several of their F-16 aircraft be permitted to operate out of UK air bases on the Falklands which has been approved, and Chilean vipers will be deployed to the Mount Pleasant Airbase. Comms and scheduling will be distributed in a separate document.
